Vomitory: Terrorize, brutalize, sodomize

23/03/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

This is single-handedly one of those albums that I have looked forward to the most over the last years. There’s really no need for me to go into detail about what my relationship with Vomitory looks like, you can find that out briefly in the review I did for ‘Blood rapture’ if you want to. Let me just use a small quote from that one, a quote that completely explains what Vomitory is about:

“I know Vomitory like the top of my cock and I understand how they compose and more importantly: why they do it like they do it. They breathe death metal. They shit death metal. They are fucken death metal with every bone in their decomposing bodies, and without hesitating I’d say that Vomitory is one of the finest death bands we have in this world.”

That needs to be said.

As the first one outside the actual band who got a copy of this album some months ago, it’s safe to say that I have devoured every second of it, dissected it into pieces and lived it for quite some time now. And with the powers of Internet-leaking, you fuckers prolly got yer hands on it as well by now. So, you should be very well aware of what this album contains: death metal played by the best of them. Few bands can groove like Vomitory grooves when it comes to this genre of heavy music, something’s that’s been proven over the years with the albums in these guys’ repertoire.

“Terrorize, brutalize, sodomize” not only displays a gory cover (with one of the most bizarre and disgusting pictures inside the booklet. That alone justifies a purchase) that completely reeks of insane death metal and brutality. The material is up there as well, like anyone expected anything else.

Vomitory’s got a unique sound. Not unique as in “original” or anything, but there’s no way you can mistake Vomitory for any other death metal band. They have their thing down to the core. They compose death metal in a way that no one else matches in the death metal world.

It’s nice to see that the Vomitot’s understand the charm of opening an album with everything at once (Thank you, Seance and “Saltrubbed eyes”). No mercy. No bullshit. A horsecock up yer ass, that’s what “Eternal trail of corpses” brings, and from that moment you’ll be floored. As you try to get back on yer feet before the count of 10, “Scavenging the slaughtered” knocks you down again. Face it, you’ll be down most of the time during the length of this record. And you’ll fucken love every second of being knocked right the fuck out.

Trying out a new studio (Leon Music) proved to be a wise decision since “TBS” sports the best damned production in the career of Vomitory. For the first time ever with Vomitory you actually get a bass that’s completely up-front and sounding absolutely massive. I’m almost convinced they put Erik’s bass that loud just to please me. Fantastic.

Not only is the bass sounding ace, Erik’s vocals never sounded better either. He definitely pulled out some unexpected power for this one, and he should be damn proud of himself. Without a doubt one of the best growlers around, though a little variety in his shit wouldn’t hurt. Then again, why change something that completely works? If I want variety, I can go listen to Six Feet Under.

Eh…

There are no compromises in Vomitory’s sound, that’s for sure. Never were, never will be. We get death metal anthems such as the title-track (with its fantastic chorus, where Erik’s backed up by studio owner Rikard Löfgren) and my other absolute fave-tune, “Flesh passion”. A tune that sums up exactly everything that makes Vomitory kill all competition.

ROTTEN CADAVER!!!!!

Not to forget the already mentioned “Eternal trail of corpses”, another highlight among many highlights on “Terrorize, brutalize, sodomize”. Most of the tunes are sniffing at the 9 to 9,5 rating at my glorious scale of death metal hits. There are a few things that lower the overall grade though, but more of that later…

Tobben’s drumming is still among the finest in the scene when it comes to death metal. Not the most technical shit around, but definitely one of the grooviest. “Tasty” is a word that definitely describes Tobben’s style. Muthafucken tasty. Listen. Listen and fucken learn. The sound is ace as well, tons of power and yet very clear and distinct.

Peter’s solos are short, effective and sweet. The rhythm guitars are nailed better than Christ was, back in the glorious days. Nice tone to them as well, something that was lacking a little on “Primal massacre”.

This album definitely is a grower. It’s not as “direct” as “Primal massacre” or “Blood rapture” at first encounter, but given time it ranks up to being very fucken close to the quality of those 2. It’s another bomb of the finest death metal I know and love, make no mistake.

There’s actually only three real downsides to this album;

1. The track “The burning black” doesn’t do much for me. This is not a kick in the nuts to new guitarist Peter or anything (yes, it’s his song, but I wouldn’t have dug it even if Peter Forsberg wrote it), I just don’t like it all that much. The Stockholm 90’s death vibe in it is fine but that Obituary lead-riff is just… meh. I bet it’ll be a fave for alot of other people though, but I’m not “other people”. I love Vomitory the most when they do what they are best at: blasting and shredding all kinds of shit into pieces. And I got 9 other tracks where they do that better than everyone else, so…

2. I hate one riff in “March into oblivion”.

3. “Whispers from the dead” holds a opening-riff that I will never get into.

April 20th, 2007, is the date when this piece of blastiality hits the stores. I fucken demand that you purchase it when it does.

As a round-up, lemme just say that I actually got the honour to give titles to 2 of the tracks on “Terrorize, brutalize, sodomize”. Nope, we’ll never tell you which ones, hoho…

8,5
